One of today’s most raved about skin-care items is facial oils, is one that many people are confused about and even afraid of. Everybody wants dewy, luminous skin without the greasy look and the easiest way to achieve this is with oils, which nourish your skin from within. While oils do have some slight variation in their main benefits in general, the main benefit — moisturizing — is something that they all have in common. Skincare experts like Caroline Hirons recommend using oils in the evening, as this is when the skin is at rest, meaning the oil can work it’s magic and repair/protect skin during sleep. I’ve also started using Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate every second day about twenty minutes before applying makeup. A step that’s really helping to sort out my parched winter skin. In this post I’ll review my daytime oil and nightime oil, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair.
First up is the Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate. The texture is of course a little on the greasy side (it is an oil after all!) so I use it very sparingly and wait a while before applying makeup. It soaks in beautifully though and really creates a great canvas for your primer or makeup. It also smells incredible, a non-overwhelming citrus floral scent and doesn’t irritate my very sensitive comlexion (or senses). As for the sciency bits, Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate is of 100% natural origin, mineral oil free, non-comedogenic (so it won’t clog your pores)!, non-acnegenic oil (safe for blemish prone complexions). It contains Tamanu Botanical Oil, which helps to reduce the appearance of daily damage (such as fine lines and sun damage), as well as being able to replenish and comfort the skin. Lastly it contains Ginger Root Essential Oil – a natural oil that will protect against radicals and environmental aggressors (think pollution and general city living) with antioxidant protection.
For nightime, I use Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum. A cult classic that really does live up to it’s hype.
First up, in terms of texture it’s way thicker than the Kiehl’s offering- which makes sense as it’s a product designed to be super nourishing for nightime. The Chronolux technology in ANR helps to reduce the appearance of previous damage, uneven skintone and gives immediate hydration to parched skin. Enhanced environmental repair technology helps to defend the skin and creates an optimal environment for the skin’s renewal with the vital ingredient Hylauronic Acid. I can really notice a difference on the evenings when I don’t use this, my skin is lacklustre, slightly rougher in texture and doesn’t hold makeup as well as it does when I’ve used it.
So what’s your verdict on face oils and serums? A skincare saviour or an unessecary waste of time and money?
