A few months ago I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to stay at Lough Eske Castle, Hotel & Spa, Donegal. A five star restored castle that has been named the World’s Best Luxury Country Hotel for five consecutive years. From the moment we entered the grounds of the castle (which is set on 3 acres of forest woodland, surrounded by the shores of Lough Eske on one side and the Blue Stack Mountains on the other) I was overwhelmed by the relaxed grandeur and extraordinary personal service and attention to detail. Definitely a 5 star stay that I would recommend to my friends and family.
Firstly, the grounds are simply stunning. I had to stop the car on more than one occasion to look around and take it all in. I can’t think of another hotel in Ireland that has views as magnificent as these.
The inside decor didn’t disappoint either. The hotel, which has only been open since 2007 has been lavishly refurbished and extended to create the modern comforts and graceful refinement of a world class boutique hotel- and it shows from every inch. It felt like I was entering a movie set.
Our room was beautiful also, the castle seems to achieve the impossible of being both modern and traditional. With our room having tons of space, two amazing comfortable beds and an enormous and well-equipped bathroom which was perfect for relaxing in.
After dropping our bags to the room we headed to the bar for some nibbles and a drink. The service was incredible, I really felt like I was being tended to personally but I wasn’t harassed or bothered either. The food was delicious too- I couldn’t fault it.
It was an early night on this trip and I’m seriously glad of that, the beds were some of the comfiest I’ve ever stayed in. I woke up feeling like I’d slept for a year. We headed down for an early breakfast and the spread was incredible. There was a huge selection of both hot and cold food and everything I tried was delicious.
The trip was a flying visit so unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to check out the spa. The perfect reason to schedule a return though I reckon!
