At the beginning of this month I was invited to experience a weekend at The Redcastle Oceanfront, Golf & Spa Hotel, Donegal, the county that has been voted THE COOLEST PLACE ON THE PLANET. Never one to turn down the chance to enjoy a little bit of luxury, I was excited to see what The Redcastle Hotel had to offer.
The drive from Ashbourne, Co Meath to Donegal was quite enjoyable to be fair, even though it was long, it didn’t feel like it. We made a pit stop in Derry on the way for a spot of shopping. Two primark bags later, we were back in the car and on the way to the hotel, which was only about 20 minutes from Derry. We got a lovely warm welcome from the staff on reception upon our arrival and they checked us in with ease. The decor was fabulous!
You just cannot beat the first moment you swipe your keycard into a new hotel room. It always comes with a combination of excitement and suspense, and The Redcastle Hotel didn’t disappoint. Our suite was hugely spacious and felt much more special than a standard hotel room. Before going i did see stunning suites on their website with an oceanview, and i have to be honest, i would have loved that, but i knew the hotel was fully booked up on the weekend that suited us with their being a wedding on, so the hotel couldn’t give us that room, and the one we got was still lovely.
The studio suite had all the luxury amenities you would expect from a 4 star hotel and much more! Chocolate strawberry treats, fluffy white robes and slippers that all added to the hotel experience. The marble bathroom was readily stocked with luxury lotions and potions from VOYA, meaning short-breakers can leave all the heavy toiletries behind such as shampoo and conditioner.
After check-in we took a little stroll and explored the hotel. The views from the hotel were stunning.
After the travel down it was a nice relaxing night in our comfy room.
The following morning we got up nice and early and went down for some breakfast and the view just instantly brightened the mood.
The buffet style breakfast had everything from cereals, to pastries, to fresh fruit & bread and then all the trimmings for a traditional irish breakfast, and being on our holidays, of course we went for the full irish, and it was delicious. It set us up for the day.
Following on from breakfast, we went back to our room and got ready for our spa experience. We were checked in and taken to the relaxation room. Anytime i go to a spa, which is not very often, all offers welcome 😉 a wave of calm just comes over me. I felt so relaxed straight away. I had the same feeling the last time i was in a spa chilling in the relaxation room, and i deliberatly went down early for that extra little time in the relaxation room. I wasn’t even out of bed two hours and while in there i managed to have a little snooze…. and this was before the treatments had even started!!
When we got into the relaxation room we were offered something to drink and were given some refreshing cucumber water. When it was time for our treatment our lovely therapists came to bring us to the double treatment room. It was so lovely to be able to have our treatments done together in the same room, only my second time to experience a double treatment room!
We both went for the same treatment, a deep tissue back, neck and shoulder massage and it was so relaxing. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. We then went into the swimming pool for a little dip, and it was nice an quiet. The pool is closed off for children from 12.30pm to 4.30pm so it was nice and quite and relaxing and overlooking the ocean.
After our beautiful spa experience we took a little drive to the beautiful town that is Buncrana. As it was a sunday, most places in the town were closed, but we got some lunch in a place called Oscars, and the food did not disappoint. We took a stroll through the town and then headed back to our hotel to relax for a few hours before getting ready for more food, this time in the beautiful restaurant in the hotel.
I have to be honest, i genuinely did not expect such a fine dining experience in the hotel restaurant, everything from start to finish was just exquisite! We were welcomed with a lovely glass of bubbly.
For starters my husband went for a beautiful butternut squash soup which was served with a mini soda bread loaf and it was so tasty, of course i had to have a little taste. I went for goats chees with beetroot, pear and walnuts. It was mouthwatering, and all of the flavours together were just delicious!
Mid course we were treated to this delicous and superbly cooked lamb chunk served with roasted parsnip. Again, delicious!
Clive went for chicken for his main served with creamed mash and veg, and i went for steak with peppercorn sauce (i never got a picture of my steak because i tucked in before the picture got taken) but it was cooked to perfection and there was no fault with it, again both mains were amazing! For dessert, clive had lemon cheesecake and this was just gorgeous, i was totally sorry i didn’t get it too! It wasn’t your standard slab of cheesecake, it was the lemon cheescake part swirled in the centre of the place with two pieces of triangle meringue in it, with some biscuit crumbles on the side and some raspberry jus also on the plate, just gorgeous!
Our stay at The Redcastle Oceanfront Hotel Donecal was an absolute delight from start to finish. We enjoyed decadent food, beautiful surroundings and fantastic service. Along with some very thoughtful extras, all these things made the whole trip very memorable. The friendly staff cannot do more to make you feel welcome. If you are thinking of booking a luxurious short break in Donegal away from the main town and big bright lights, I would recommend The Redcastle Hotel in a heartbeat.
At the moment they have an excellent Spring offer running at the moment
